Cabaret Nights – Roaring Success

Our sell out Cabaret evenings were a roaring success!  Both evenings were completely sold out. Thank you to everyone involved and to everyone who came. The evenings were so successful they raised £3400 for our fund.

Don’t forget that there is another cabaret evening booked for December – we expect even greater demand for these tickets so remember to get them early to avoid disappointment!

Mouse Racing a Runaway Success!

On Saturday 23-Jun, SWAG held their first fundraising event at Stanton Drew Village Hall.

A sell-out crowd enjoyed a few drinks, a delicious supper and some top notch rodent racing. Thanks to some tightly-negotiated (and allegedly secret) pre-race sponsorship deals, plus some vigorous bidding by certain individuals, we raised a total of £1400 which will contribute to the legal costs accumulated so far.

Big thanks go out to everyone who attended, but especially to Julie Bragg and Jane Thatcher for the organsisation, and Jim Farmer for compering and commentating in his inimitable style.

The next events are the Cabaret Nights on 25th and 26th August and the Valley Green Belt Show on Saturday 1st Sept.

Special Cabinet Meeting

Thank you to everyone who turned up for the special cabinet meeting – what a great turn out.

Also a big thank you to Pat Filer for providing transport.

We had some fantastic representation, and were able to hold our ground well against the questioning. Thank you to everyone who spoke. The result was not totally unexpected as the parties were pretty much putting a three-line whip on voting – we did lobby some of the opposing councillors fairly heavily and the proposed amendment was partially to keep them on board.

Interestingly that we seem to have been ‘heard’ even if not “listened to”.

Richard Harwood (our Counsel) made a 3 minute presentation and answered questions for a further 17 minutes. Richard, having set out the basis of his considerable experience and standing in these issues also advised that he has been appointed by BaNES in the past and had in fact turned down an appointment to act for BaNES in this matter. He advised that;
•     in his opinion the process was deeply flawed and would cause serious difficulty to the Council if they are legally challenged,
•    that the action of pausing this process now would not harm the progress of the Core Strategy Plan through its adoption stages,
•    that the failure to put right the significant errors  in the process could render more harm to the progress of the Core Strategy,
•    that the analysis of the numbers of pitches that should be provided was flawed and should be readdressed if it is to be robust against challenge or scrutiny by the inspector looking at the Core Strategy

We will be in consultation with the legal team and other groups over the next couple of days. So watch this space.

In the mean time the consultation (or is it a “pre” consultation?? – whichever, it is in the public domain) is still in place – so PLEASE make sure that the Response Forms are filled in and returned.

ITV coverage of the event is here:

Also – if you have one of the hand banners from last week – please can you ask someone with a garden on the A37 or A368 to put it in a visible position.

Thank you

There is an article in Western Daily Press today. Also here:  We like Cllr Balls quote: “It is always better to use something that is right rather than something that is slightly wrong.”

Conservative councillor Malcolm Hanney, a member of scrutiny panel, has a much clearer view on the Stanton Wick site “We feel it is quite ridiculous that the site is on the list, given that it is Green Belt, past planning decisions, contamination and lack of local amenities.”
